What We Do

Numbers that tell you where the business is going.

Most owners get financials that report the past. We build accounting that measures growth and profitability while you can still act on it — then handle the tax, advisory, and training around it.

01 — Core

Accounting Services

Clean monthly books are the starting point, not the product. What you actually need is a reliable read on whether the business is growing, which work is profitable, and whether cash will be there next quarter. We close your books on a schedule, then turn them into reporting you can make decisions from — trends over time, margin by product, service, or job, and the handful of numbers that matter for your business.

Common Questions

Questions growing businesses ask us.

Straight answers to what owners actually want to know before they pick an accountant.

When should I switch from a bookkeeper to a controller?

Most businesses outgrow basic bookkeeping somewhere between $1M and $3M in revenue. The signal is not size alone — it is when you start making decisions you cannot support with your current reporting. If you are hiring, quoting large jobs, carrying inventory, or talking to a lender, and your books only tell you what happened two months ago, you need controllership. A bookkeeper records transactions. A controller owns the monthly close, watches cash flow, and tells you what the numbers mean while you can still act on them.

Is it cheaper to outsource accounting or hire someone in-house?

For most businesses under roughly $15M in revenue, outsourcing wins on both cost and quality. A single in-house hire runs well past $70,000 annually once benefits, payroll taxes, software, and training are included — and you are still relying on one person with one skill level, who takes vacation and eventually resigns. For less than that, our Outsourced Finance package gives you a full complement of specialists: transactional support, controller-level review, and CPA oversight.

You also get a higher standard of work. Our staff are trained on current best practices and the best available technology, with documented processes and a second set of eyes on the close — controls a one-person back office structurally cannot provide. See our accounting packages for how the tiers compare.

What is the difference between a CPA and a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper records and categorizes daily transactions — the raw data layer. A CPA is licensed by the state, must meet ongoing education and ethics requirements, can represent you before the IRS, and can perform attest work such as audits and reviews in addition to tax and advisory. The practical difference is judgment: a bookkeeper tells you what happened, while a CPA tells you what it means and what to do about it. Our firm is CPA-led, so tax strategy, representation, and advisory are all handled in house.

Am I paying myself a reasonable S-corp salary?

If you own an S-corporation and take distributions, the IRS requires that you first pay yourself reasonable compensation for the work you actually perform. Pay too little and you invite reclassification, back payroll taxes, and penalties; pay too much and you overpay FICA unnecessarily. Reasonable compensation is determined by your role, hours, industry, geography, and comparable market wages — not by a percentage rule of thumb. We document a defensible figure and revisit it as your business grows.

How much does it cost to work with your firm?

Monthly accounting starts at $400 per month and scales with transaction volume and account count. Individual 1040 returns start at $650, itemized and self-employed returns at $1,050, and business returns are quoted based on entity type and complexity. Controllership and Outsourced Finance packages are scoped individually. See our pricing page for full detail — every fee is confirmed in writing before work begins.

Do you work with businesses outside of Torrington?

Yes. We are based in Torrington and serve all of Litchfield County, but we work with clients throughout Connecticut and in other states. Secure document exchange through our client portal, video meetings, and cloud-based QuickBooks mean location is rarely a constraint. Multi-state filings and nexus questions are routine work for us.

My books are a mess. Can you clean them up?

Yes, and it is more common than you would think. We start with a diagnostic review to see how far back the problems go, then rebuild the chart of accounts, reconcile every account, and correct prior-period errors. Cleanup is quoted separately from ongoing bookkeeping because scope varies enormously. Once the books are right, keeping them right is the easy part.

Will I actually be able to reach my accountant?

Yes. You get a named point of contact who knows your business, not a rotating support queue. We answer questions year round rather than only in filing season, and clients on Controllership and Outsourced Finance packages have scheduled review calls built into the engagement. If a decision cannot wait for the next call, call us.

What do you need from me to get started?

A short conversation first — usually 20 to 30 minutes — to understand your entity, revenue, current systems, and what is not working. From there we will ask for recent tax returns, access to your accounting file, and bank statements for the periods in question. We send a written scope and fee before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
